Abstract

9-Formylvinyl-julolidine is prepared by adding paraldehyde to 9-formyl-julolidine in concentrated sulphuric acid at 0 DEG C., pouring the product on ice and treating with sodium carbonate.ALSO:The Specification relates to methine dyes of the general Formula I <FORM:0975922/C4-C5/1> wherein Q is a pyridinium or quinolinium group, substituted or not, and joined to the carbon atom through its nitrogen atom, W is a benzoyl, cyano or 2-benzothiazolyl group, P is a dialkylamino-aryl or 9-julolidinyl group or the group <FORM:0975922/C4-C5/2> (to give a symmetrical dye), m is 0 or 1 or, when the dyes are symmetrical, m may be 2, and X is an anion. The unsymmetrical dyes are prepared by condensing a compound of the formula P1-CH(=CH-CH)m=O (where P1 is dialkylamino-aryl or 9-julolidinyl) with a pyridinium or quinolinium salt of Formula V [Q-CH2-W]\sJx\sK. The symmetrical dyes are prepared by condensing a salt of Formula V with a trialkoxypropene, a dialkoxymethyl acetate, a trialkyl orthoformate or glutaconic aldehyde dianil hydrochloride. The pyridinium group Q may carry a bromine atom or methyl group in the 3-position or a phenyl substituent.
