Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0577260/IV/1> wherein R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group, e.g. methyl, ethyl, benzyl, phenyl or naphthyl groups which may be substituted by alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, amino, substituted amino, nitro, hydroxy, alkoxy, hydroxyalkyl, sulphonic or carboxylic groups or by halogen atoms are prepared by condensing the appropriate hydrazine with diethyl or other dialkyl malonate and sodium ethoxide. 1 : 2-diphenyl-3 : 5-diketopyrazolidine is prepared by dissolving ethyl malonate and hydrazobenzene in a solution of sodium in ethyl alcohol and heating, distilling off excess alcohol, diluting and precipitating with hydrochloric acid. 1 : 2 - Di - (p - chlorophenyl) - 3 : 5 - diketo - pyrazolidine, and 1 : 2 - di - (b - naphthyl) - 3 : 5 - diketopyrazolidine are similarly prepared. According to the Provisional Specification, the two groups R1 may be different and may be hydrogen atoms or heterocyclic groups, e.g. quinolyl, pyridyl, or furyl groups. Additional compounds specified are 1 : 2-diquinolyl-3 : 5-diketopyrazolidine, 1 : 2-di-lepidyl-3 : 5-diketo-pyrazolidine, 1 : 2-di-(41-methoxyphenyl)-3 : 5-diketopyrazolidine, 1 : 2 - di - (31 - nitrophenyl - 3 : 5-diketopyrazolidine, 1 : 2-di-(p-xenyl)-3 : 5-diketopyrazolidine, and 1 : 2-di-(p-tolyl)-3 : 5-diketopyrazolidine.
