[Also in Division B6] A panel for the furniture and building industry is characterised by the panel, which is opaque overall, embodying light reflecting and light refracting bodies of synthetic material which are artificial gem stones or imitation jewels and are arranged in the form of a pattern especially an ornamental pattern and are embedded in synthetic material, especially an unsaturated polyester, so far as the light incident faces thereof. As shown (Fig. 1) the panel 1 consisting of a matrix of unsaturated polyester has a coloured and hardened outer gel covering layer 2 and a back layer 3 and has embedded in it pyramidal ornamental stones 4 of glass having a surface 4<SP>1</SP> exposed and flush with the exposed surface 2<SP>1</SP> of the panel. The stones may be arranged to form a pattern as in Fig. 5. The ornamental stones may be provided with indescent layers by vapour coating in a vacuum and/or with a mirror layer; they may also embody small and if desired interrupted holding edges which may be overlapped by the surface layer or the matrix material in order to secure better anchoring. An outer layer of the panel may be transparent and the embedded elements may be completely covered by the transparent layer. The matrix may include additionally glass-like or coloured grains such as crushed glass, glass fragments or splinters or small natural coloured stones. The panel may be made by applying a parting compound to a backing sheet, placing the ornamental stones on the backing plate in the desired arrangement so that they are held in position by the parting compound acting as adhesive, and applying the plastic matrix to cover the stones completely. Finally the panel is separated from the backing, cleaned and hardened. To increase the strength, reinforcing members may be embedded in the plastic The panel is particularly suited to use as a table top or a tray.
