Abstract
A process for preparing a coal-oil slurry comprises mixing the coal with the oil, passing the mixture to a flash zone maintained at a pressure below that of the mixing zone, and recovering a coal-oil slurry of reduced water content. The coal and oil may be mixed at a temperature between 90 DEG and 150 DEG C., or 80-100 DEG C. if the flash zone is maintained under a partial vacuum, e.g. 10-27 inches Hg, which is preferred. The slurry may be removed from the flash zone by means of a barometric leg or pump, and the water vapour from this zone may be condensed, and treated in an oil-water separator to separate any oil which may have passed over. Preferably, the coal particles are sized 1/8 inch or less. The slurry may be used in a blast furnace (see Division C7).ALSO:Coal-oil slurries prepared by mixing coal and oil, passing the mixture to a flash zone maintained at a pressure below that of the mixing zone, and recovering a coal-oil slurry of reduced water content (for details see Division C5) are used for firing blast furnaces. The slurry may be injected into the blast-pipe connecting the tuyere and the air main, and the coal particles are preferably sized 1/8 inch or less to allow the injection of the slurry into the blast-pipe to be at a point as close as possible to the tuyere.
