Abstract

<PICT:0682718/III/1> In a process for the heat treatment of ores as a fluidized bed in a furnace, the feed to the furnace is in the form of a pumpable slurry and the liquid portion of the slurry is separated in the bed. The amount of water present in the slurry may be regulated in order to control the temperature in the furnace; combustible oil may also be supplied to the furnace, either mixed with the slurry or separately, in order to provide heat. In the apparatus shown, slurries of finely-divided ore from the top and bottom of the thickener 11 are blended at 14 with filter cake from the filter 13 to provide a slurry of suitable characteristics; this slurry is then pumped into furnace 20 (see Group XII) either above or into the fluidized bed; treated ore is removed at 21. Examples describe the roasting of iron sulphide ore prior to recovering its gold content, and the calcining of vanadium hydrate to vanadium pentoxide.
