A control rod drive is enclosed in a sleeve 1 mounted beneath the reactor vessel at 3a and includes a shaft 4 attached to the control rod by a bayonet coupling 16 and driven through a rack 5 by a pinion 6, a fluid being circulated through the sleeve from inlet 17 to outlet 18 to prevent the accumulation of radio-active products in sleeve 1. Shaft 4 carries a valve member 8 and the sleeve a corresponding seat 10. Universal joint 9 allows accurate seating of the valve member when the rod is in its lowest position; simultaneously a pin on the shaft engages a slot in a dashpot 7 so that rotation of the base 15 of the sleeve frees coupling 16 and allows removal of the drive mechanism, which is prevented from contamination by the flow of fluid through the sleeve. Pinion 6 is mounted on a shaft provided with sealing rings and driven through a magnetic clutch. A spring 7a allows rapid shut-down.
