Abstract

975,557. Fuel injection pumps; starting fuel injection engines. C. A. V. Ltd. April 18, 1961 [April 19, 1960], No. 13610/60. Headings F1A and F1B. In a combined rotary cylinder and distributor type fuel injection pump, a shuttle 120 is slidable in a cylinder in the body of the pump, the outward movement of the shuttle being controlled by an adjustable stop 119; when the pump cylinders communicate with the outlets 110 the inner end of the shuttle cylinder communicates with the fuel feed from a pump 101 and the outer end with the fuel reservoir. The quantity of fuel fed to the inner end of the shuttle cylinder may be controlled by a throttle 113 or the stop 119 may be controlled by a governor. When the outlets 110 are cut off from the pump cylinders the inner end of the shuttle cylinder communicates with the axial passage 108 via a passage 126, fuel being discharged from the shuttle cylinder into the passage 108 to charge the cylinder 103 by fuel feed pressure acting on the outer end of the shuttle. The shuttle 120 may have a conical end seating in the passage 117. For starting purposes the cylinder 103 may be fully charged by opening a manual valve 128. In a modification (Fig. 13 not shown) a further shuttle is slidable in the passage 108 between the cylinder 103 and the shuttle discharge passage 126, the passage 108 having a spill port controlled by the shuttle to determine the end of delivery. The arrangement gives injection at a predetermined instant in the cycle.
