Abstract

Alkali metal salts of nitrilotriacetic acid are prepared by adding a mixture of hydrogen cyanide and formaldehyde to a solution of aqueous ammonia and an alkali metal hydroxide while maintaining the temperature at 40 to 55 DEG C., subsequently raising the temperature to 100-105 DEG C., adding sufficient formaldehyde to eliminate excess hydrogen cyanide and recovering the reaction product. The mixture of hydrogen cyanide and formaldehyde contains an excess of about 10 to 20% of hydrogen cyanide and is added at a constant rate to the aqueous alkaline solution. Sodium hydroxide is the preferred alkali metal hydroxide. Nitrilotriacetic acid may be obtained from its trisodium salt by treatment with hydrochloric acid. Examples describe the preparation of trisodium nitrilotriacetate and its conversion to the free acid. Disodium iminodiacetate and sodium glycinate are obtained as by-products.
