Abstract

1,199,614. Hydantoins and their use in the production of amino-acids. NIPPON KAYAKU K.K. 12 Oct., 1967 [12 Oct., 1966; 19 Oct., 1966], No. 28127/69. Divided out of 1,199,613. Heading C2C. Hydantoin derivatives of the formula: wherein R is an alkyl group, which may be prepared by reacting a compound of the formula with hydrogen cyanide or a salt thereof and ammonium bicarbonate or ammonium carbonate or carbon dioxide and ammonia, may subsequently be hydrolysed to give compounds of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or an alkyl radical. The reaction for producing the hydantoin may be effected in an aqueous solution or aqueous organic solvent under ambient or elevated temperature or pressure conditions. For the subsequent hydrolysis reaction the hydantoin may be separated from the reaction mixture or it may be hydrolysed in situ with conventional acids or alkalis to form the 2-amino-4-alkoxy- or -hydroxy-butyric acids. Further 2-amino-4- hydroxybutyric acid may also be obtained by hydrolysing the 2-amino-4-alkoxybutyric acids with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. Specific examples are given in which the radicals R and R<SP>1</SP> (when alkyl) are methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl.
