In a halogen gas detector the hot resistance of a porcelain or quartz tube 21, Fig. 2 between spaced electrodes 22, 23 is measured by a meter. 26 to indicate the presence of halogen in the vicinity of the tube, the tube being heated to a semiconductive state by a coil 25. In a modified arrange - ment, described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown), the resistance between a centre tap on the heater coil which is wound around the outside of a tube and an electrode on the inner surface, is measured. Changes of body conductivity and surface resistance, resulting from ionization of the halogen by the hot body are said to occur as a result of ion absorption.
