974,869. Flue &c. cleaning appliances. WARD'S FLEXIBLE ROD CO. Ltd. Oct. 30, 1963 [Oct. 31, 1962], No. 41117/62. Heading F2N. An appliance for cleaning flues and pipes comprises a scraper or cleaning device 5 carried by a flexible shaft 4 consisting of or including an open-coiled wire helix in combination with a control or guide plate 10 adapted for fixing over an opening 3 in a flue or pipe 1 and through which the shaft is adapted to pass into the flue, and a coupling member 23 which can be removably engaged with the coils of the helix. The arrangement is such that the scraper is first pushed into the flue by hand, the plate is fitted over the opening, and the coupling member is then engaged with the helix so that by rotation of the shaft, as by a handle 9, the shaft is caused to be fed forward through the flue by a screw-and-nut action. As shown the plate 10 is locked within the opening 3 by a catch 13 operated by a pivoted handle 14, and the member 23 is in the form of a U-shaped cotter the legs of which pass into slots in a tube 20 and between the coils of the helix 8. The plate may be replaced by a pin which engages in holes in the tube 20, or a lever mounted on the plate 10. Specification 958,158 is referred to.
