974,762. Making grids for discharge tubes; coiling; corrugating; brazing. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 24, 1961 [March 3, 1960], No. 7482/60. Headings B3A, B3E and B3R. [Also in Division H1] A grid for use in a discharge tube comprises a length of tape, the longitudinal edges of which are curved in the same sense in the plane of the tape, wound into a spiral with the major surfaces of the tape inclined to the axis of the spiral. As shown, a flat tape 1, Fig. 2, a corrugated tape 2 of annealed copper, 0.001 inch thick and 0.1 inch wide, are spirally wound on a partspherical former 3. The tapes may be silverplated so that after winding, the grid may be encircled by a support ring and brazed in an inert or reducing atmosphere. The longitudinal edges of the tapes 1, 2 should have a radius of curvature in the plane of the tape equal to the radius of curvature of the former 3, so that after winding the major surfaces of the tapes converge towards the centre of curvature of the former 3. The edges of the tapes may be curved by reducing the thickness of one edge relatively to the other edge by use of a table 5, Fig. 3, having a recessed edge 6 along which the tape is caused to lie by moving a flanged roller 7 around it as shown. Alternatively, a length of flat tape may be pressed between a pair of conical rollers 14, 15, Fig. 6, or between a pair of cylindrical rollers having their axes inclined to each other. The tape 2 may be formed by pressing it between a pair of intermeshing corrugated rollers 10, 11, Fig. 5, the axes of which are inclined to each other. Specification 964,262 is referred to.
