Abstract

Diesters of terephthalic or isophthalic acid with at least one monohydric aliphatic alcohol containing 1-6 carbon atoms are prepared by heating the acid and alcohol at a temperature of 150-300 DEG C. in the presence of at least one metal salt, oxide or hydroxide and at least the same amount by weight, based on the acid, of a high molecular-weight polyester which has been obtained by the polycondensation of terephthalic or isophthalic acid and a glycol. In examples terephthalic acid is heated at 250-280 DEG C. with methanol or ethanol in the presence of polyethylene terephthalate and zinc acetate or sodium hydroxide, and isophthalic acid is heated at 280 DEG C. with n-butanol in the presence of polyethylene isophthalate and manganese acetate. Under the reaction conditions the polyester is said to depolymerize and the resulting acid, together with the free acid supplied, is esterified. Other specified catalysts are manganese orthophosphate, calcium acetate, aluminium chloride, sodium silicate, magnesium acetate, magnesium phosphate, lead oxide, magnesium oxide and alkaline-earth metal hydroxides.
