In the manufacture of linear aromatic polyesters by polycondensing a bis-(omegahydroxyalkyl)-ester or a bis(omega-hydroxycycloalkyl)-ester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, there is used as a catalyst a fluoride of lithium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, aluminium or zinc or a mixture of such fluorides. Specified dicarboxylic acids are terephthalic and isophthalic acids and specified diols are ethylene glycol, 1: 3 - propanediol, 1: 4 - butanediol and 1: 4-dimethylolcyclohexane. In examples, ester-interchange was effected between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol in the presence of zinc acetate and the resulting bis - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - terephthalate polycondensed in the presence of the metallic fluoride.
