973,873. Fluid operable lifting apparatus. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. March 21, 1963 [March 29, 1962], No. 12045/62. Heading B8J. In a fluid-operable piston and cylinder unit for lifting apparatus, fluid can flow to and from a cylinder 1 by way of a port 3 and a pipe 4. The port is divided into three coaxial portions of different diameters. A flanged and stepped plug 5 has a spigot-like stem 5a which is surrounded by the skirt of a hollow piston 7. The plug also has an axial passage 6 which communicates with radial passages in the stem 5a. An annular seating 5b at the end of the stem is adapted to close a central hole 7a in the piston 7 and a compression spring 8 normally urges the piston 7 away from the stem seating 5b. In use, fluid can flow to or from the cylinder 1 under control of a valve (not shown). However, should the pressure in the cylinder exceed the pressure in the pipe 4 by more than a predetermined amount, due, for example to a pipe failure or to the piston 2 descending at excessive speed under load, the piston 7 will close against the seating 5b and prevent or permit only slow escape of fluid from the lower end of the cylinder.
