Abstract

973,745. Heating and cooling. F. A. SOMMER. Feb. 15, 1961 [Feb. 15, 1960], No. 5645/61. Heading A5R. Apparatus for treating the body with hot and cold water sprays comprises a spray body having discharge perforations located in sequence in at least one direction, alternate perforations being connected with a cold water supply line and a hot water supply line, respectively. Parallel cold water spray tubes 4 having aligned perforations 1 are connected to a cold water manifold 6 and alternate with similar hot water spray tubes 4<SP>1</SP> which are connected to a hot water manifold 7. The tubes and the manifolds are arranged in a frame A which is suspended by rods 10, 10<SP>1</SP> from a plate 11 above a patient supported on a plate D. The manifolds are connected to hot and cold water supply lines 3, 2 respectively, both directly through flexible hoses 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, 9, 9<SP>1</SP> and indirectly through branch pipes 17, 19. and interrupter valves 16, 18. Switch-over cocks 33, 34 in each supply line are operated by a common handle 35. In one position of the cocks, water flows directly to each manifold so that cold water and hot water are sprayed on the patient simultaneously by the tubes 4, 4<SP>1</SP>. The frame A carrying the tubes may be reciprocated in a direction transverse of the tubes by an electric motor 13 connected through a crank drive including a rod 14 with a pair of suspending rods 10<SP>1</SP> so that the areas being treated alternately receive cold and hot water in rapid sequence. In another position of the cocks, water flows to the tubes under the control of the interrupter valves 16, 18. The valves are mounted in separate chambers in a housing 26; the chambers being connected to the hot water and cold water supply lines, respectively. Each valve comprises a disc 22, 23 having diametrally opposite cut-away portions and is carried centrally by a common shaft which is rotated through gearing by the motor 13. The discs are mounted so that the cut-away portions of one are at right-angles to the cut-away portions of the other so that when one disc obturates the pipe 17 leading to the cold water tubes 4, the other disc permits hot water to reach the other tubes 4<SP>1</SP> and vice versa so that the patient receives cold water and hot water alternately.
