Abstract
Manganese is obtained by distillation from a molten bath of carbon-containing ferro-manganese, the total quantity of iron in the bath being such that the carbon is entirely dissolved as it is liberated during the distillation. The solvent iron may be due entirely to the ferro-manganese or additional iron, in the form of scrap, may be added before or during the distillation. The distillation is preferably effected at a temperature of 1200-1300 DEG C. and a pressure of 10-3-1 mm. Hg. Pig iron is obtained as a by-product.
