Abstract

973,177. Picking black-currants. A. E. BROOKES. Aug. 23. 1963 [Sept 3 1962]. No. 33670/62. Heading A1F. A method of harvesting black-currants comprises first cutting fruit-bearing branches from a bush and then feeding the branches into a plucking machine wherein the currants are separated from the branches. The machine is similar to a hop-picking machine and comprises a pair of powerdriven picking belts 5 arranged with two parallel runs where the picking fingers 8 interdigitate and travel together, and a pair of power-driven conveyer chains 13 having parallel runs which extend transversely across those of the picking belts and cooperate to grip and convey the branches between the picking fingers. The machine is portable and is attached at one end to a tractor (not shown), being supported at its other end on castorwheels 2. The cut branches are laid upon an endless belt 23 so that the cut ends all abut a guide-rail 27. The belt feeds the branches so that the cut ends are gripped in the nip of the chains 13 and are carried thereby across the track of the picking fingers. The stripped branches are fed out of the machine on to the ground by means not shown, and the stripped berries fall on to a transverse conveyer 18 which feeds them to an elevator 19 discharging on to trays 20, 21. The elevator housing is combined with air-trunking 31 connected to a winnowing fan 30 which removes light trash. A tray 32 is provided at the entry-end of the belt 23 to catch berries detached during feeding of the branches. The various belts and the fan are driven from the tractor through a shaft 10.
