Abstract
1,164,993. Harvesting peas. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 8 Feb., 1967 [9 Nov., 1965], No. 47399/65. Heading AlF. A pea-picking apparatus, movable along a plant-row, comprises bine-lifting means 3 which raise the pea-bine into an upright position, gripping means 4 which engage temporarily with the bine below the peabearing portion thereof and carry this portion rearwardly as the apparatus advances, and picking means 19, 20 disposed above the bine-gripping means to contact, and cause separation from the bine of, pods situated at progressively higher portions of the upper portion of the bine as the latter is carried rearwardly through the gripping means. The apparatus is mounted on a frame 1 secured laterally to a tractor (not shown) by links la and 1b and carried on a single ground-wheel 2. The lifting means comprise dividers flanking a rearwardlytapering passage leading to a nip between endless belts 4 carried on pairs of vertical rollers 5, 6, 7, the front and rear pairs 5, 6 being spaced apart and the intermediate rollers being spring-pressed inwardly to cause the belts to grip the bines. The picking means comprises a pair of conical rollers 19, 20 rotating inwardly and upwardly to provide a nip which admits the bines but rejects the pods which fall off on to an inclined surface 27 down which they roll on to a conveyer-band 29 leading to a bagging shoot 30. The rollers 19, 20 are both supported and driven from their rear ends only, and slope upwardly and rearwardly and also laterally so that progressively higher and higher bine-portions are stripped as the bine travels rearwardly. The belts travel rearwardly at the same speed as the forward speed of the apparatus and the bines are cut at ground-level by a reciprocating mower-bar 13, 14 of which the upper, knife, bar 14 is longitudinally reciprocated by a crank and pitman from gearing driven by the groundwheel 2 which also drives the belts and picking rollers. In modifications (not illustrated) the drive may be derived from a motor on the machine or from the tractor.
