A spinneret suitable for making conjugate filaments is supplied axially with a spinning composition or solution from a source 25, and radially with a second spinning composition or solution from the source 21. The first spinning solution passes through the spinneret plate 11, and the small discrete streams of spinning solution so formed are converged in the chamber 12 by the radially inward flow of the second spinning solution. The combined solutions pass through the restriction in the chamber to a second spinneret 29. The flow of the combined solutions is laminar owing to the high viscosities and slow rates of flow of the two spinning solutions. Hence the central portion 41 of the bundle of filaments emerging from the spinneret 29 is derived from the axially-supplied spinning solution from source 25, the annular band of filaments 42 is derived from the radially-supplied spinning solution from the source 21, and the annular band 40 comprises composite filaments. Different spinning solutions may be fed in through the holes 20 and 22, so that different filaments in the band 40 will be made up of different combinations of spinning solutions. On annealing the tow the composite filaments curl and twist, so deflecting the other filaments from their normal linear configurations and tending to hold the tow together, facilitating subsequent processing.
