972,717. Shearing; making magnetic heads. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 20, 1961 [Dec. 27, 1960], No. 45601/61. Headings B3A and B3W. [Also in Division H1] A strip of magnetic material 74 (Fig. 11), of constant width W 3 ( = W 1 + W 2 ) is fed in the direction 76 by the two sets of rollers 71, 75 and the slitting knives 72 and shearing knives 78 are used to cut the two laminations 73, 74, of widths W 1 , W 2 respectively, from the strip. The knives 72 are indexed to the left in small equal steps between the cutting of successive pairs of laminations until at the final cut the width of 73 is W 2 and the width of 74 is W 1 . When the two sets of laminations thus formed are assembled in order, two substantially trapezoidal shaped stacks 32, 33 result and these may be assembled with other stacks to form a polygonal cross-sectioned magnetic core leg (Fig. 12). The slitting knives 72 may be replaced with a pair of shears and the knives or shears may be kept stationary while the strip is indexed laterally. Indexing may be controlled by a computer which is programmed so that the profile of the lamination stacks has a prescribed linear form.
