Abstract

972,583. Testing materials. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 10, 1963 [Oct. 22, 1962], No. 39862/62. Heading G1S. Materials testing apparatus for applying stress to specimens comprises a load member 1, insertable within the charge tube C of a nuclear reactor, and a support member 2 pivotably connected by linkage 3 to member 1 and supporting an array of specimens 4 also pivotably connected to linkage 3. When the apparatus is supported from the upper end of the charge tube by the support member 2 the load member 1 is supported through the row of specimens 4 so that the specimens 4 are subject to a tensile load proportional to the weight of load member 1, thus enabling the specimens 4 to be stressed whilst subject to irradiation. The weight of the load can be varied by addition or subtraction of weights 12.
