Abstract
972,510. Casting machines. E. Q. SYLVESTER. March 16, 1962, No. 10144/62 Heading B3F. A method of making a mechanically-formed metal produce comprising pressure casting, sealing the mould cavity at the extrenubes thereof from the atmosphere by means other than the molten metal, allowing the molten metal in the cavity to at least partially solidify so as to have all shrinkage voids internally thereof and entirely sealed from the atmosphere, heating the casting to above the welding temperature of the metal and then mechanically working to weld the shrinkage cavities before the metal cools to below welding temperature. The molten metal is forced from a ladle 3 in a pressure bell 5 through a spout 2 having outlets 8 connected to two-part graphite moulds 10. When the moulds are filled, fusible wires 28 melt, allowing spring-loaded brass or copper &e. plugs 18 to close the top ends of the moulds, while gate valves 16 are actuated by means 21 to close the other ends. After cooling to have at least a self-supporting shell, each casting is removed and cooled more slowly. It may then be rolled or extruded at a temperature above the welding temperature into bars, rods or wires without additional preparation other than the cropping of small sections from the ends.
