Abstract
Disintegrable detergent tablets are made from a detergent powder containing a non-detergent substance which is capable of being liquefied by heat without affecting the other ingredients by agglomerating the powder into tablet form, e.g. by means of light pressure in a mould, and then heating the tablet for a time and to an extent sufficient to liquefy at least part of said substance, after which the tablet is cooled to solidify the melt and bind the tablet. The liquefiable substance may be sugar or gelatin, an anhydrous salt such as sodium carbonate or hexametaphosphate, or sodium perborate, borate, sulphate or carbonate, aluminium sulphate or potassium aluminium sulphate in their partly or fully hydrated forms; sodium perborate tetrahydrate is favoured and the liquefiable substance is usually present in excess of 2% by weight. The heating is generally to 40-300 DEG C. and may be carried out so as to heat the entire mass of the tablet, e.g. in a microwave furnace or by capacitative heating, or merely so as to heat the tablet surfaces, e.g. by contact heating with hot air or plates. While cooling, the tablet may be irradiated, placed in an air stream, or kept under a vacuum. After cooling, the tablets may be coated, e.g. with polyvinyl alcohol, paraffin wax or water-glass. Surface irregularities may be removed by treatment with steam, or by sprinkling with water. The detergent powder base may contain sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate, soap, fatty acid monoethanol-amide, a condensate of ethylene oxide with nonylphenol, sodium pyro- and tripoly-phosphate, silicate, sulphate and carboxymethylcellulose, fluorescent brightener, perfume and preservative. According to the Provisional Specification, sodium aluminium sulphate 24-hydrate and paraffin wax may be used as the liquefiable substance.
