Abstract
971,930. Moulding refractory materials. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 5, 1962 [June 12, 1961], No. 21682/62. Heading B5A. [Also in Division G6] Nuclear fuel pellets are made by mixing a powdered refractory fuel material, e.g. uranium oxide, carbide, nitride or silicide, with a suitable binder and lubricant to form a paste which is granulated, the grains being dried and screened and then compressed in a press provided with two monobloc stamps of truncated conical shape to form male and/or female end parts on the pellets. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 8, the press may have one monobloc and one multiple stamp, the latter comprising two coaxial cylindrical stamps 18, 19 slidable in relation to one another and shaped to form a male end part. The monobloc stamp 17 forms a female end part. The head 21 of the inner stamp 18 is attached to a plate 23 by means of a screw 24 whereas the head 22 of the outer stamp 19 rests on three equi-spaced stops 25 spaced from one another at angles of 120 degrees around the head 21, a rubber ring 20 being located between the heads 21, 22. Compression of the granules 15 is effected by lowering the stamps 18, 19, the outer stamp 19 stopping on touching the granular mass while the inner stamp 18 slides within the stamp 19 until the heads 21, 22 abut, whence the stamps 18, 19 apply equal pressure to the granules 15. The compression should be bilateral if the pellet is to have equal densities in two cross-sections symmetrical in relation to the median plane of the pellet and this may be achieved by mounting the press block on springs, this causing the stamp 17 to have a relative upward movement with respect to the granular mass. A press having one monobloc and one multiple stamp as described above provides for the manufacture of larger pellets than a press having two monobloc stamps. After compression is applied, the pellet obtained is ejected by returning the stamps 18, 19 to their initial high position and raising the stamp 17.
