Abstract
1,062,765. Nuclear fuel. DEUTSCHE AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN ZU BERLIN. May 12, 1965, No. 20044/65. Heading G6C. Nuclear fuel particles, especially of spherical or substantially spherical shape, comprise ceramic nuclear fuel cores coated with nuclear fuel nitride. To form the coating, a gaseous halide of a nuclear fuel is reacted with excess ammonia at 1000-1600‹ C. in the presence of a fluidized bed of powdered uranium, plutonium, or thorium nitride. The halide may be uranium or plutonium hexafluoride or a tetrahalide of uranium, plutonium, or thorium; in an example the halide is UCl 4 which may be obtained by halogenating irradiated nuclear fuel. For use as a nuclear fuel, the fuel particles may be dispersed in a solid matrix or mixed to form a paste.
