Abstract

The monosodium salt of D-benzyl-penicilloic acid is prepared in the form of its hemihydrate by treating benzyl penicillin sodium salt with 0.05N sodium hydroxide followed by acidification to pH5 and byophilization. The free acid is obtained by accurate neutralization with dilute HCl and may be converted to the ferric salt by reaction in aqueous solution with iron ammonium alum in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The cobaltous salt is similarly prepared by reaction with cobalt chloride.ALSO:Pharmaceutical growth-promoting compositions comprise a carrier and a penicilloic acid or a salt or ester thereof, e.g. an alkali or alkaline earth metal, iron or cobalt salt, an acid addition salt e.g. with lysine or arginine or an ester with diethylamino-ethanol, the term penicilloic acid being used to refer to compounds of the general formula <FORM:0971734/A5-A6/1> wherein R represents an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or aryloxyalkyl radical. The compositions may be in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration, e.g. a pill or oral or injectable solution and may comprise conventional oxcipients and Vitamin B12.
