Abstract

971,448. Hydro-mechanical variable-ratio gear; Clutches. A. LYSHOLM. May 20, 1963 [May 21, 1962], No. 20012/63. Headings F2C and F2D. A hydromechanical gear providing a splittorque low ratio range and all mechanical direct drive and overdrive, comprises a planetary gear having an input planet carrier 15, a ring gear 14 fast with an output shaft 12 and a sun gear 17 which is selectively clutchable by a clutch 26 to the impeller 34 of a hydrodynamic torque converter, and is clutchable by a clutch 25 to the planet carrier 15 for direct drive, and is stationable by a brake 22 for overdrive. The torque converter comprises a stationary casing 31 having guide blades 32, and has a turbine 33 connected by a one-way clutch 29 to the output shaft 12. The clutches and the brake are all of the single-plate type, the clutches 25, 26 being engageable by means of interconnected pistons 19, 20 located in cylinders formed in a flange 18 fast with the sun 17. The brake 22 is applied by a piston 23 mounted in a cylindes formed in a stationary housing 7. The planet carrier 15 is fast with a shaft 5 connected through a flexible coupling 4 to a fly-wheel 1 on the crank-shaft 3 of an internal combustion engine which is such that the maximum full throttle torque is at least 1.2 times larger than the full throttle torque developed at the maximum speed of the engine. The planetary gear provides a speed multiplication of between 1.3 : 1 and 1.7 : 1 when the sun gear is stationed, and the torque converter has a stall torque ratio of between 5: 1 and 7: 1.
