971,162. Valves. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Feb. 21, 1963 [Nov. 21, 1961], No. 41627/61. Heading F2V. [Also in Divisions A5 and F1] A jet inoculation instrument of the type which derives the pressure for jet injection from the admittance of a gas under pressure into a chamber associated with a plunger movable to pressurize a body of the inoculant, is provided with a pressure-operated valve to prevent the admittance of gas into said chamber if the gas pressure is below that required for satisfactory injection of the inoculant. As shown, the instrument comprises jet inoculation instrument A and gas dispensing device B which may be the device disclosed in Specification 971,161. The pressure-operated valve comprises valve seat 118 and member 120 attached to plunger 121 slidable in bore 122 of piston 112, and urged towards valve seat 118 by adjustable screw 124 and spring 123. In use when compressed gas container 4 is screwed on member 1, point 6 of piston 5 pierces container 4 but no gas is allowed to escape until actuator 2 is depressed. On depression of actuator 2, cam 9 rotates and allows piston 5 to rise under the action of spring 8. Gas enters inlet in instrument A and if the gas pressure is great enough, valve member 120 is moved against spring 123 away from seat 118 and gas enters chamber 117 and exerts a force on piston 112, which force is transmitted by plunger 111 on to ampoule piston 110 which pressurizes ampoule 109 causing the ampoule to rupture and the contents thereof to be ejected. Other types of ampoules may be used, e.g. an ampoule with a diaphragm designed to be pierced by a needle or a refillable ampoule. After injection the actuator 2 is released and this causes the opening of gas relief valve 10 to allow the release of gas trapped in the outlet of the dispensing device B and in the instrument A. On the release of gas pressure in inlet of instrument A the piston 112 is moved back under spring 115 and the gas in the chamber 117 is released through the inlet and valve 10 until the valve member 120 rests against seat 118. Any gas now remaining in chamber 117 is released through a non-return valve. This valve (see Fig. 2) takes the form of a rubber disc 128 normally pressing against rib 129. If the gas pressure in chamber 117 is greater than that in the inlet of instrument A, the disc 128 is forced away from rib 129 and gas passes from chamber 117 to valve 10 via passages 133 and 130 and the inlet of instrument A.
