Abstract

971,097. Printing processes. CARTER'S INK CO. Nov. 12, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1961] No. 42585/62. Heading B6C. A sheet 12 is printed by placing a source sheet 10 having at one surface a fluid phase containing relatively electrically charged mobile particles of a detectable material in surface-to-surface contact with the recipient sheet 12 having at its contiguous surface a fluid phase, placing electrodes 14 and 16 on opposite sides of the sheets and setting up an electrical field therebetween to cause at least some of the particles to transfer from the sheet 10 to the sheet 12 in a predetermined pattern. The upper electrode 16, Fig. 1, may be in the form of a character the shape of which is thus transferred to the sheet 12. The sheet 10 is impregnated with an aqueous solution of a charged dyestuff, examples of which are given, and the sheet 12 is impregnated with a potassium chloride solution or with water. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 the source sheet 10 is impregnated with four dyes of different mobilities and polarities and recipient sheets 12h, 12i and 12j are located above it and sheets 12g, 12f and 12e below it; the whole assembly being located between a base electrode 14 and a character electrode 16. The cationic yellow die and the anionic red dye printed on sheets 12e and 12j respectively since these dyes are of greater mobility. Reversing the direction of the applied D.C. potential causes the dye ions to migrate in the opposite direction and if the recipient sheets are only on one side of the source sheet causes the printing to be erased. Stencilling apparatus.-In the embodiment of Fig. 3, the electrodes 14 and 22 are coextensive and the shape of the pattern transferred from the sheet 10 to the sheet 22 is determined by a stencil 20 having cut-out areas 21. Hidden printing.-Counterfeit detection is illustrated in Fig. 9 in which a ticket, having identifying characters in a charged dyestuff which are obscured by the background, is applied to a moistened sheet in the presence of an electrical field. The characters are thus rendered visible on the moistened sheet. The code characters may be obscured within printed visible characters forming part of a serial number ordinarily appearing on the ticket. The material removed electrophoretically during identification may be replaced by reversing the current.
