Abstract

A plain bearing has a bearing surface comprising a layer of thermoplastic material of average molecular weight above 150,000, other than an alpha-olefin, with or without the addtion of up to 40% by volume of a filling material such as a metal powder or fibre, a metal oxide powder, graphite, asbestos or glass fibres, or a fibrous or powdered plastics material such as polytetrafluoroethylene. The thermoplastic material may be bonded to a metal strip the surface of which may be roughened or rendered porous, to assist bonding, as by etching, phosphating, sandblasting, or forming thereon a sintered layer of bronze or other metallic powder. In an example, high molecular weight polycarbonate in granular form is spread on steel or aluminium strip rendered pitted or porous and the strip passed beneath I.R. heaters and through a rolling milling to soften and consolidate the coating, the strip then being cooled and cut into semicircular bearing blanks. Bearings are defined as including any components having surfaces bearing in use directly or through lubricants against other surfaces relative to which they have sliding movement, for example pistons, piston-rings, cylinders, ball or roller bearing cages, and electrical contact brushes. Specifications 894,961, 938,931 and 970,981 are referred to.
