Abstract

A plain bearing, i.e. a member or assembly with a surface capable of having relative sliding movement with another surface, has a bearing surface comprising a layer of polypropylene, preferably of isotactic or syndictactic form, with or without up to 40% of filling. The polypropylene layer preferably has a thickness of not more than 0,125 inch, the preferred range being 0,001-0,030 inch. The filler may be metal powder or fibre, a metal oxide powder, a powder or fibre of plastics material, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene, graphite powder, or asbestos or glass fibres. The bearing layer is secured to a backing which may be of metal such as steel preferably pretreated by etching, phosphating, anodizing, sandblasting, or coated with a layer of sintered powder of a metal such as bronze. The polypropylene may be applied in the form of granules subsequently heated and pressed to the metal by rolling. The cooled composite material is cut into blanks which may be formed into semicircular bearing shells. Specification 970,982 is referred to.
