Abstract

A composition in layer form constituting a plain bearing surface comprises a polycarbonate, such as the reaction product of a 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl alkane (e.g. bis-phenol-A) and diphenyl carbonate or carbonyl chloride, containing up to 40% of a filler such as a metal powder or fibre, a metal oxide powder, polytetrafluoroethylene or other plastics powder or fibre, graphite powder, or asbestos or glass fibre. In examples, (a) a layer of poly-bis-phenol-A carbonate contains 10% of glass fibres, (b) a layer of polycarbonate, applied as a powder subsequently softened and bonded by heating, contains a proportion of polytetrafluoroethylene powder.
