Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula <FORM:0970948/C1/1> wherein X is phenyl, fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine in the ortho or para position, and R is an ethyl or allyl radical. The compounds are prepared by condensation of substituted malonic acid ethyl esters with urea. Ethyl substituted-phenyl-acetates prepared are ethyl 4-biphenylyl-acetate by treating the acid with thionyl chloride so forming the chloride and treating this with ethanol, ethyl p-fluorophenylacetate by treating the acid with sulphuric acid and ethanol, ethyl p-chlorophenyl-acetate by treating the nitrile with ethanol and hydrogen fluoride, ethyl p-bromophenyl-acetate by treating the acid with ethanol and hydrogen chloride, and ethyl p-iodophenyl-acetate by treating p-iodobenzyl-bromide with potassium cyanide to form the nitrile and thence obtaining the ester. Ethyl esters of substituted-phenyl-malonic acids are prepared by condensing the acetates with ethyl oxalate, sodium salts being initially formed of intermediate oxalacetic acid esters, and decarboxylating with heat. Reaction with compounds R-halogen then yields C,C-substituted malonic acid ethyl esters. Specification 825,832 is referred to.
