Abstract
<PICT:0970687/C6-C7/1> A nuclear fuel element (see Division G6) comprises a core of uranium carbide surrounded by a sheath of aluminium-steel alloy of 13 - 40% b/w aluminium, and of a thickness less than 0.3 mm. (0.015 inch). The sheath alloy may also include beryllium or silicon. A barrier layer may be provided between the core and the sheath, comprising chromium, zirconium, niobium, yttrium, beryllium, copper, the oxides of these metals, aluminium oxide, or magnesium oxide, and the barrier may be attached to the fuel, the sheath, or to both.
