Nuclear fuel element including (a) a central core of a body of nuclear fuel material consisting of uranium, plutonium, thorium compounds or mixtures thereof, and (b) an elongated compound sheath container including a portion exterior formed by a zirconium alloy that contains other components in an amount greater than 1000 parts per million and that forms a substrate and a high purity zirconium metal barrier of constant and non-deformable thickness, which has a low elastic limit, and is resistant upon radiation increase, and that it is metallurgically bonded to the internal surface of the substrate, the amount of impurity in the metal of said metal barrier is less than 1000 parts per million, and said sheathing container envelops said core in order to leave a cavity between said core and said sheath during use in a nuclear reactor; It has a substrate and a zirconium metal barrier metallurgically bonded to the internal surface of the substrate.
