Abstract
Sodium phosphide for use in polymerization catalysts is made from a 35% dispersion of sodium in petroleum jelly, red phosphorus and white oil. The mineral oil and sodium dispersion are charged to a 500 ml. 3-necked flask and the whole purged with nitrogen, stirred and heated to 95 DEG C. The red phosphorus was added and after reaction the contents of the flask were made up to provide a 1.0 molar solution of Na3 P. Practical details of the preparation are provided in Examples I and III.ALSO:Olefines are polymerized in the presence of (a) a nitrile or phosphide of Group Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIa or IVa metal and (b) and oxide, chloride, bromide, iodide, acetylacetonate, alkoxide or oxytrichloride of a heavy metal, B, Si or As. Examples of heavy metals given are Ti, Zr, V, Fe, Sb, Bi, Sn, Co, W, Cr and Ni. Examples describe the polymerization of propylene.ALSO:A catalytic composition comprises (a) a nitride or phosphide of a metal of Group Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIa or IVa of the Periodic Table* and (b) an oxide, chloride, bromide, iodide, acetylacetonate, alkoxide or oxytrichloride of a "heavy metal" \sW, B, Si or As. *The version of the Periodic Table referred to is that given in Lange's "Handbook of Chemistry" Fifth Edition, Handbook Publishers Inc., 1944, pages 54 and 55. \sW By the term "heavy metal" are included all of the elements embraced by the heavy black lines in said handbook. Specified heavy metal compounds are titanium tetrachloride, zirconium tetrachloride, zirconium acetylacetonate, titanium tetrabutoxide, vanadium oxytrichloride, ferric chloride, ferrous chloride, antimony pentachloride, bismuth trichloride, titanium trichloride, stannic chloride, cobaltous chloride, antimonyl chloride, tungsten pentachloride, chromium chloride, and nickel chloride. Specified components (a) are Li3N, Na3N, K3N, Ca3N2, Mg3N2, Ba3N2, AlN, GaN, Li3P, Na3P, LiMgP, Li2P5, Na2P5, K2P5, Mg3P2, Ca3P2, Ba3P2, ZnP2, Zn3P2, BP, AlP, GaP, SnP3, Sn3P4 and PbP2. The catalytic composition may be made in a hydrocarbon medium, e.g. petroleum ether, heptane, kerosene, mineral oil, diesel oil, benzene or toluene.
