Abstract

Chelate complexes of a metal of Group IVA, VA and VIA of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table with a polydentate chelate compound which is at least tridentate are used as components of polymerization catalysts. Polydentate compounds mentioned are tripyridyl, 2-alpha-pyridyl - 8 - hydroxy - quinoline, azo - bisortho - hydroxybenzene, ortho - hydroxybenzene - azo - beta - naphthol, and the trimer obtained from the condensation of paramethyl N-methyl aniline and formaldehyde. Metals mentioned are titanium, chromium, and cobalt. The complex of chromium trichloride and azo - bis - ortho - hydroxybenzene is stated to exist in two forms. In examples, a chromium complex is made by dissolving ortho-hydroxy - benzene - azo - beta - naphthol and chromium trichloride hexahydrate in ethanol, refluxing the solution for 23 hours, adding toluene dried over sodium, and removing the ethanol by distillation, and a titanium complex by mixing in toluene, TiCl4 and ortho-hydroxy-benzene-azo-beta-naphthol.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst for olefines comprises the reaction product of (1) a hydride or organometallic compound of a metal of Group I or II, of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table, or aluminium, and (2) a chelate complex of a metal of Group IV(a), V(a), or VI(a) of the Periodic Table with a polydentate chelate compound which is at least tridentate, i.e. a compound which can make three bonds with a metallic atom and, in so doing creates two rings in the complex. The polydentate compound may be tripyridyl, 2-alpha-pyridyl-8-hydroxy - quinoline, azo - bis - ortho - hydroxybenzene, ortho - hydroxy - benzene - azo - betanaphthol, or the trimer obtained from the condensation of paramethyl - N - methyl aniline and formaldehyde. The chelate compounds exemplified are obtained by reacting ortho - hydroxy - benzene - azo - beta naphthol with chromium trichloride hexahydrate, or with titanium tetrachloride. The organometallic compound specified is diethyl aluminium chloride. The olefine may be ethylene, styrene, butadiene, or isoprene. The polymerization may be effected in a hydrocarbon diluent.
