Abstract

1487393 Ziegler polymerization catalyst preparation IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Jan 1975 [12 Feb 1974 18 Nov 1974] 06240/74 and 49734/74 Heading C3P Alpha monoolefins are polymerized in the presence of a Ziegler catalyst comprising (a) an organometallic compound of aluminium or a metal of Groups Ia or IIa and (b) a titanium trihalide component obtained by (i) reacting a titanium tetrahalide and an organoaluminium compound to produce the trihalide, (ii) treating the product with an ether complexing agent and (iii) treating the further product with a hydrocarbon solution of an alkylaluminium dihalide in a proportion of 0À1 to 100 moles per mole of trihalide. Optional features of the preparation of component (b) include separation of the solid product at the various stages of treatment and washing the separated product. Optional further catalyst ingredients include (c) Lewis bases such as amines, amides, (thio) ureas, organophosphorus compounds, ethers, esters, ketones, alcohols and their thioanalogues, and organosilicon compounds, and (d) polyenes such as 3-methyl hepta-(1,4,6)-triene, cyclooctatriene and cycloheptatriene derivatives. The examples describe the homopolymerization of propylene in a hydrocarbon diluent in the presence of (a) Et 2 AlCl, (b) the reaction product of (i) TiCl 4 and Et 2 AlCl which has then been separated, (ii) treated with diisoamyl ether, and then (iii) with a solution of EtAlCl 2 , i- BuAlCl 2 or i-Hex.AlCl 2 in toluene or a C 12 hydrocarbon mixture, and, in some cases (c) hexamethylphosphoramide.
