Abstract
970,291. Making wire articles. H. A. HARDAKER. Oct. 15, 1962 [July 13, 1961], No. 25358/61. Heading B3E. A machine for shaping lengths of wire to form, for example, paper clips comprises bending means acting in co-operation with retractable pegs so that all the bending operations take place in one plane. A length of wire severed by a cutter 2 from an intermittently fed supply is bent into U-shape, Fig. 6A, about a peg 4, projected through a table 6, by fingers 18, Fig. 1. The fingers 18 are pivoted at 14 on a slide 8, advanced towards the peg 4 by a cam 26 on one of shafts 20-23, and are moved towards one another by the engagement of their rear ends with a stop 17. The wire is next bent to the shape of Fig. 6B about another peg 4 by fingers 18 which are mounted to swing clear of the table 6 during their return by engagement with stops 19, Figs. 4, 5. The wire is then bent to the form of Fig. 6C about another peg 4. The wire is clamped during each bending by a pivoted lever 30 actuated by cams on the shafts 20-23. To flare the tip of the clip the last peg 4 employed has a notch thereon which, during retracting movement of the peg, engages the first formed loops and bends the wire against a suitably shaped fixture on the bed.
