Abstract

Apparatus for making and joining links for use in the manufacture of flexible bed and chair supports includes a pair of co-operating driven rollers to feed the wire to severing and forming means, one roller carrying a cam which engages the other roller to move one of the rollers away from the other and thus stop the wire feed so that a knife may sever the length fed. Wire 1 from a reel passes through straightening rollers 2 and driven feed rollers 3 to a knife 7, the upper roller carrying a cam (6), Fig. 2 (not shown), engaging the lower roller so that the upper roller is intermittently moved away therefrom to stop the feed of the wire and allow the knife 7 to sever the fed lengths. The severed length is folded around a pin 12, Fig. 4, by pincer means 11. The pin 12 is then retracted, the bent wire being held by a clamp 9 on a head 8. The head 8 is then rotated to carry the bent wire to means (13), Fig. 5 (not shown), which twist the neck of the link, the free ends of which are bent over at right-angles by a movable member (15). The bent-over end is further bent back by a cam-operated pivoted member (16), Fig. 6 (not shown). The link is then carried by the head 8 to means (19), (20), Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), which fit the bent-over end of the preceding link into the head of the link last formed and press down to close the hook of the link.
