Apparatus for the manufacture of wire clothes hangers comprises a plurality of peg-like elements, projecting from or through a working surface, around and/or between which a wire may be placed in order to make the wire conform approximately to the desired shape of the body of the hanger. Pegs 13, 14 extend through slots 26 in a plane surface 11 of a base 12 and are moved apart by a lever 20 which rocks a cam 23 axially to move rods 25 carrying the pegs. Pegs 17, 18 extend fixedly from the surface 11 and pegs 15, 16, 19, carried by a spring-urged plate 28, are retractable through the surface 11 by the depression of a pivoted lever 31 by the lever 20. In operation a length of wire is laid in a slot 36, in a rotor 40 rotatable in a mounting 34 on the side of the base 12, in a slot 35 in the mounting 34, passed around the pegs and back through the slots and then bent back at right angles at the end 39. A crank handle 21 of the rotor 40 is swung about a pivot 37 at right angles to the rotor axis and a catch thereon engages the wire end 39. The handle 21 is turned to twist the wire ends together and then swung back about the pivot 37 to bend the wire end 39 around a former 38 to form the hook of the hanger. The lever 20 then moves the pegs 13, 14 apart to stretch and straighten the hanger and then retracts the pegs 15, 16, 19 to release the completed hanger.
