Abstract

970,004. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. M. A. SHAHRESTANY. Sept. 9, 1963 [July 19, 1962], No. 27706/62. Heading F1F. A rotary piston I.C. engine of the intermittent abutment type, comprises a cylinder 1, Fig. 1, swept by a first two-armed piston 7, 8 keyed to a concentric main shaft 4 extending longitudinally of the cylinder and a second twoarmed piston 9, 10 mounted on a sleeve 11, Fig. 2, loosely surrounding the shaft and intermittently driven by the first piston through gearing 12, 13, 15, 16, Fig. 6. The gear 13 has half the number of teeth of the gear 12 so that the piston 9, 10 travels at twice the speed of the piston 7, 8 when teeth of the partly-toothed gear 15 engage the teeth of the gear 16. A spring- loaded pawl and ratchet device ensures unidirectional rotational of the second piston. A combustion chamber 20 formed between the leading face of a piston arm 9 or 10 and the trailing face of a piston arm 7 or 8 is fitted with a plug 19 or hot-spot ignition aid located substantially diametrically opposite inlet ports 17, 18 for air and fuel respectively. An exhaust port 21 is located substantially at 270 degrees from the inlet ports in the direction of rotation of the pistons. Air sucked into the cylinder 1 through the port 17 cools the cylinder and also the piston 9, 10 which is formed with openings 31, 32. The piston arms 7, 8 are hollow and filled with lubricant supplied through the shaft journals to lubricate the ends of the cylinder. Seals 37 are received in radial piston grooves 35, 36. Further seals (not shown) are fitted on the ends of the pistons. A valve 22 operated through gearing from the main shaft 4 controls the fuel inlet port 18.
