969,963. Cooling reactors. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Dec. 6, 1960 [Dec. 9, 1959], No. 42004/60. Heading G6C. In a reactor cooled by a suspension of a liquid in a gas, the liquid is injected into the flow of gas through the reactor at points distributed along the flow. The liquid may be a moderator, e.g. D 2 O or H 2 O, injected through the walls of fuel channels into a gas such as air or CO 2 flowing along the channels. Alternatively liquid may be fed through pipes 10 inside tubular fuel elements in a block of graphite, as shown. The liquid may be atomized and distributed by the speed of the gas flow, by expansion at the injection orifices, or by using a gas flow, divided into separate vortices as described in Specification 951,613. Heat is extracted from the reactor by passing the mixture of gas and vaporized liquid through a heat exchanger where the liquid is condensed and thus separated from the gas.. The distribution of liquid in the fuel channels is controlled by the arrangement and dimensions of the orifices.
