Abstract
969,889. Nuclear fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 2,1963 [Sept. 5, 1962], No. 34629/63. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel element comprises a sheath 18 housing a fuel rod 16 of fertile or fissile material and closed by a plug 20 welded at 22 to the sheath 18 with an insulating pellet 24, e.g. of alumina, between the rod 16 and the plug 20, the contact surfaces 28 and 30 between the pellet 24 and the plug 20 and between the plug 20 and an abutment member 26 being sufficiently roughened to cause the plug 20 to be subjected to shear stresses when a load is transmitted between the element and the abutment member. In some cases it is preferable to replace the insulating pellet, 24 by a heat conductive pellet. The sheath 18 and the plug 20 may be formed from a Mg-Zr alloy having a very low Zr content. A rough surface is imparted to the pellet 24, which consists of a harder material than the plug 20, and the latter impresses itself on the surface of the pellet 24 during the sheathing under hydrostatic pressure. Grooves are formed in the surface of the member 26 which comes into contact with the plug 20 and penetration and anchoring of the member 26 in the plug 20 take place due to creep under load in the reactor itself during the temperature rise. The shear stresses which result from the roughened surfaces 28 and 30 reduce the tendency of the plug 20 to creep under a given compressive load. As an alternative to the re-entrant plug 20, a plug welded in prolongation of the sheath 18 (Fig. 3, not shown) may be used.
