Abstract

<PICT:0969796/C4-C5/1> <PICT:0969796/C4-C5/2> A furnace for steam cracking hydrocarbons comprises tubes heated by radiant heat and which are of uniform cross-section having rounded channels on the inner surface parallel to or at not more than 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis. The tubes may have internal ridges corresponding with the channels and a smooth circular outer surface (Fig. 4) or an undulating surface corresponding with the inner surface (Fig. 5). There may be 2-50 channels, preferably a number 2-8 times the outside diameter in inches, and the height of the convexities is preferably 25-200% of the wall thickness thereby providing 5-100% more internal surface area than a cylindrical tube having the same external diameter and average wall thickness. A typical tube would have an average wall thickness T of 0.5 inch for a tube of external diameter 4.75 inches, the maximum thickness MT being 0.625 and the minimum mt 0.375 inch with 16 grooves.
