Abstract
A connector duct for use in passing fluids from the output 32 of a cracking heater to the inlet side of a tubular heat exchanger, comprises a tubular first portion 34, 36 of circular crosssection, a curved second portion 38 flaring outwardly from the first portion in a smooth curve, a frusto-conical third portion 40 extending outwardly from the second portion, and a ring- shaped fourth portion 42 extending from the periphery of the third portion, the distance (h) from the point of intersection of the second and third portions to the outlet end of the fourth portion being about 0.03 to 0.2 times the minimum diameter of the first portion and the distance from the periphery of the third portion to the outlet end of the fourth portion being about 0.25 to 0.5 times (h). The connector duct is incorporated in an inlet device 10, said device having within a shell 26, thermal insulation 28 surrounding the duct.
