Abstract

A polymerization catalyst component is made by reacting a dry, finely divided metal or metaloid oxide, e.g. silica, alumina, titania zirconia, thoria, magnesia, silicates or aluminates, of particle size less than 1 micron, having surface hydroxyl groups, with a Group VIIA or VIII metal halide or oxyhalide at 0-300 DEG C. in an inert liquid hydrocarbon while removing the gaseous hydrogen halide. Numerous examples of reactants are given. Specifications 969,762, 969,764, 969,765, 969,766 and 969,767 also are referred to.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst suitable for up to C8 mono- or di-olefins and mixtures thereof is obtained from a Group VIIa or VIII metal halide or oxyhalide which has reacted under specified conditions (see Division C1) with a dry metal or metaloid oxide of particle size less than 1 micron, and a Group I, II, III metal hydride or organometallic compound which may contain more than one metal and/or halogen. Specified metal/metaloid oxides include silica, alumina, titania, zirconia, thoria, magnesia, silicates and aluminates. Numerous examples of reactants are given and polymerizations are also illustrated. Specifications 969,762, 969,764, 969,765, 969,766 and 969,767 also are referred to.
