969,686. Children's vehicle seats. R. A. ELLIS, and P. G. ELLIS. May 20, 1963 [June 5, 1962], No. 21635/62. Heading A4J. A child's seat which is attachable to a vehicle comprises a seating base 1, a fixed back rest 2, which is sufficiently high to support the back and head of a normal child, hooks 8 attached to the back rest 2, an angularly adjustable strut 11 pivotally secured to the seat and adapted to extend rearwardly of the back rest 2, a safety device for holding a child on the seat, and at least one loop, hole or equivalent on the base 1, for carrying a strap 17 to be secured to the floor or other fixed structure in the vehicle, below the site on which the seat is to be hooked. The hooks 8 may be U-shaped to fix on to the back of a seat 10, or L-shaped to be secured under the dashboard. The legs 9 of the hooks 8 have spaced holes to adjust the hooks vertically on the seat. The strut 11 may be angularly adjusted by using complemental toothed clutch discs 19, or (Fig.9) a detent 27 on a leaf spring 28, which is attached to the back rest 2, to engage between teeth on the end of the strut 11, or (Fig. 11) a secondary strut 11a to engage holes in a block 31 on the back rest 2. Also the strut 11 is U-shaped and may be telescopic. A second angularly adjustable U-shaped strut 14 may be attached to the base 1 to project to the front of the seat. The safety device may comprise a tray 4 or a lap strap attached to the seat. The seat shown in Fig. 9 has a U-frame 24 forming the seating base which may be folded up against the back rest about pivot 25. The seat may be used outside the vehicle with the struts 11, 14 being fixed and forming legs.
