969,248. Welding by pressure. INSTITUT ELECTROSVARKY E. 0. PATON. April 4, 1963 [Jan. 4, 1962], No. 352/62. Heading B3R. A self-propelled welding device which can move along and inside a pipe and weld the pipe to another pipe has a transformer which can be moved close to the weld. The device which is supported at the left-hand end by spring- pressed idler wheels 13 and at the other by driven spring-pressed wheels 15 comprises a central tube 1 to the left-hand end of which is fixed a cylinder 2<SP>1</SP> containing a piston 3<SP>1</SP> carrying a frusto-conical wedge 4<SP>1</SP> for engagement with frusto-conical shoes 5<SP>1</SP> supported on the cylinder 2<SP>1</SP> by springs 17<SP>1</SP>. A further cylinder 2 carrying by springs 17 frusto-conical shoes 5<SP>1</SP> for engagement with a frusto-conical wedge 4 carried on a piston 3 within the cylinder, is arranged about the tube 1 and is secured to a cylinder 7 within which is a piston 8 fixed to the tube 1. Also secured to the cylinder 7 is a casing 9 which contains an electric motor 10, electromagnetic clutches 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, an oil pump 12 and a gear-box 14 through which the wheels 15 are driven. A transformer 6 carried on the cylinder 2<SP>1</SP> is connected to shoes 5 and 5<SP>1</SP> and a burr cutter 16 is provided on the cylinder 2. In operation with a supply cable connected to a plug 18 the device is placed in a pipe A and is propelled by wheels 15 into the tube until the shoes 5 are positioned adjacent the end of the pipe. The pump 12 is then driven to supply the cylinder 2 and move the piston 3 to clamp the shoes 5 against the end of pipe A. The supply cable is disconnected and a pipe B is moved over the device, the cable is reconnected and the oil pump is operated to move the piston 3<SP>1</SP> by the right thus causing shoes 5<SP>1</SP> to grip the pipe B. With current supplied from the transformer 6, oil is supplied to the cylinder 7 to move the pipe B towards and away from pipe A to make a flash butt weld between the pipes. The device is subsequently driven to the left and with shoes 5<SP>1</SP> clamped the cylinder 7 is supplied with oil to move the burr cutter 16 across the weld. The Provisional Specification describes a similar but slightly different machine.
